Australian Citizenship — Becoming an Australian

Australian citizenship is the final step in your migration journey, giving you the full rights and responsibilities of being Australian. Once granted, you are legally recognised as a citizen and no longer hold only a visa status.

Pathways to Citizenship

Most people become Australian citizens through one of the two following pathways:

1. Citizenship by Conferral (the common pathway for permanent residents)

2. Citizenship by Descent (born overseas to an Australian parent)

Eligibility — Citizenship by Conferral

You generally must:

  • be a permanent resident

  • have lived in Australia for 4 years lawfully

  • have held PR for at least 12 months

  • meet residence requirements

  • pass the citizenship test (if required)
