Australian Citizenship — Becoming an Australian
Australian citizenship is the final step in your migration journey, giving you the full rights and responsibilities of being Australian. Once granted, you are legally recognised as a citizen and no longer hold only a visa status.
Pathways to Citizenship
Most people become Australian citizens through one of the two following pathways:
1. Citizenship by Conferral (the common pathway for permanent residents)
2. Citizenship by Descent (born overseas to an Australian parent)
Eligibility — Citizenship by Conferral
You generally must:
be a permanent resident
have lived in Australia for 4 years lawfully
have held PR for at least 12 months
meet residence requirements
pass the citizenship test (if required)
be of good character
The Citizenship Test
Most applicants aged 18–59 must pass a short online test on Australian values, history and responsibilities.
